What is an SCC certificate?

Safe working conditions and a safe working environment are important for both employees and employers. Occupational accidents would rather see both parties go than come. And now let an SCC certificate be a means of reducing the risk of this. The SCC attestation stands for 'Safety, Health, and Environment Checklist for Contractors' and ensures that employees are aware of how to work safely.

Why do I need an SCC attestation?

In some sectors, such an SCC certificate will also be mandatory as a condition of being hired. This is because it also provides employers with some assurance that their employees know how to work safely. Knowing how to work safely ensures fewer workplace accidents, and fewer accidents ensure a smoother job flow, as well as a lower cost. In addition, safe work and fewer workplace accidents also ensures more positivity in the workplace.

Where do you need an SCC certificate?

Employers will often ask for an SCC attestation in sectors where there is a higher risk of occupational accidents. So think about occupations in construction or where many workers come into contact with machnies. An SCC attestation is not yet a legal requirement, but it is the norm if you want a chance of getting a job in the following sectors.

- Security sector

- Inland navigation

- Construction sector

- Electrical engineering & process control

- Green spaces

- Timber industry

- Petrochemical & offshore industry

- Shipbuilding industry

How do I obtain an SCC certificate?

There are 2 types of SCC certificates you can obtain. A B SCC emphasises basic safety and is mainly recommended for employees working in a 'high-risk' environment. Once obtained, this certificate is valid for 10 years and you can also obtain it in French, English, German, Polish or Romanian.

The exam consists of 40 multiple-choice questions, of which you have to answer at least 26 correctly. You can take your exam at various locations in Belgium and the cost for this is between €50 and €80.  Besides the exam, there are also courses and training that can help you pass your SCC certificate easily.

Besides the B SCC, you can also obtain an VOL SCC or VIL SCC. The VOL SCC is slightly more extensive than the basic safety and is mainly completed by managers or business executives. The focus is then largely on how to encourage and facilitate their employees to work safely and in a safe environment.

In turn, the VIL-VCA is mainly taken by employees of employment agencies. The subject matter is closely aligned with the VOL-VCA but therefore ensures that you can get temporary workers to work safely. You have knowledge of the hazards and legislation in each sector and can therefore alert the temporary worker to the risks involved.
